Why we're switching to inclusive email signatures

March 2023 – Steps we’re taking, to improve the inclusivity of our email signatures:

Pronouns

We are committed to creating a diverse, equitable and inclusive workplace. That’s why we support staff to share their pronouns in their signatures. Beginning the conversation around sharing pronouns is a simple way to normalise not assuming someone’s pronouns or gender – it’s one simple step we’ve decided to take to more inclusive practice. Not making assumptions but asking for, remembering and using someone’s chosen gender pronouns is a positive way to support the people you work with.

Pronunciations

We’re supporting Race Equality Matters #MyNameIs campaign which aims to highlight names, and the importance of pronouncing them correctly. Having your name mispronounced can leave people feeling excluded and alienated so we believe that pronouncing names correctly matters, and with a phonetic translation it’s easier for people to get it right. Flexible Working

We’ve decided to add the following statement to our signatures: “At 31ten we value and respect flexible working arrangements, so I may send emails outside of normal hours, but please don’t rush to respond outside of your usual working hours”. Since the pandemic, there has been a significant rise in the number of people working flexibly and non ’traditional’ hours (aka 9-5 work hours). We recognise that this is the case for both our colleagues and clients, and we want to respect your boundaries and working arrangements.
